Another piece of Piggott history bit the dust this week in time, as workers razed the old ice house on West Main (site of the current library). The ice house was added to W.F. Smith's soda bottling company in 1921. When he closed the doors after sixty years in the soda business in 1927, the building was sold to Ark-Mo Power and in the late 1930's it was acquired by T.W. Leggett and Hubert C. (H.C.) Robbins. It remained in operation until 1960, and during the 1940's part of the building housed the city light office.
Department of Education stats are out for local districts. During the 1968-69 school year Corning averaged 1,354 students per day, Piggott averaged 1,135, Rector's average was 762, Knobel averaged 436 and Greenway around 182 kids. Spending per child for the 1969-70 year was--Greenway at $491, Rector at $446, Corning at $415, Knobel at $380 and Piggott at $343. The state average was $417.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the features included--"Winning" along with "The Italian Job" and Arlo Guthrie in "Alice's Restaurant" was the late show feature.
Gary Nichols, 19, has been named director of bull riding for intercollegiate rodeo competition at ASU. He's the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Nichols of Piggott. Meanwhile, Sgt. First Class Wilson Roofe is home from Vietnam to be with his wife Frances (Causey) Roofe during an illness.
And Bud's State Line Gas Station has sold to Clovis and Cecil Moore of Pollard and they've taken over operations and will soon hire a mechanic.
1980
Judge Rue C. "Cupie" Mack has announced his intentions to run for re-election as county judge. Meanwhile, James L. Magee, executive vice president of Piggott State Bank, attended the Arkansas Banker's Association annual meeting in Little Rock.
New officers for the Piggott Ministerial Alliance are--president John Hedrick of the First Christian Church; vice president Denzil Stokes of the First United Methodist Church and Dr. William Oakley of the First Baptist Church was re-elected secretary and treasurer. Also in the news, work is underway on improvements at Chalk Bluff Park thanks to a $53,000 CETA grant.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "Roller Boogie" while the late show was "Gas Pump Girls."
Births to report this week include a son born to Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Cluck Feb. 15 at Doctor's Hospital in Poplar Bluff. They've named the new arrival Jason Allen Cluck. And, the Catfish CB Club members braved extreme cold to man a roadblock for the Heart Fund in the past week. Over $205 was raised in the effort.
In sports, the Mohawks ended their season at 12-12 overall and 6-6 in conference, and are to face Salem in the first round of the district at Rector. Meanwhile the Lady Mohawks fell to Walnut Ridge in their season finale. The junior boys lost their district tournament game to Corning at Hoxie, while the junior girls also fell to the Bobcats to end this year's campaign.
1985
Members of the quorum court discussed buying computers for the Extension Service offices at their meeting, and reviewed the increasing problems of beavers in parts of the county. Also in the news, members of the school board reviewed planned improvements to Piggott Elementary School and discussed the re-building project at the middle school campus.
Toby McGuire was crowned Sadie Hawkins King this year, with a court of Kirk Redman, Randy Low, Sammy Williams and Brian Trolinger. Meanwhile, Kevin Rouse, Terri Green and Melissa Erwin were all named to the All-Region Band. Rouse was tops on his saxophone, and will perform with the All-State Band at Henderson University.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "Night Patrol."
Dora McGhee presented the VFW flag patriotism program at PES, and was pictured with Daniel Gossett, Russell Scott, Jason Boyster and Kimberly Johnson and their coloring books.
In sports, the Mohawks lost three of four in the past week and are set for the 2-AA North tournament at Walnut Ridge. The lady Mohawks ended their season with a 45-62 loss to Clay County Central, and took time to honor senior Sabrina Tate. During her three years on the team she had totaled 1,039 points. The Lady Mohawks later fell to Highland to end the season 48-49.
The junior boys lost to Hoxie by 11 and end their season with a record of 14-9, meanwhile, the junior Lady Mohawks lost to Corning in their tourney by 20 to end their season.
1990
Marhsall Wheeler of Piggott was given the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of America at a meeting in Jonesboro. It's the highest honor that can be bestowed on a volunteer scout leader. Meanwhile, Congressman and Mrs. Bill Alexander were guests of honor at a breakfast by the Clay County Democratic Party at the Piggott Community Center.
Piggott students Allison Turner and Kerry Champ took first and second in the Clay County Spelling Bee this week in time. And Kevin Blascoe was named Sadie Hawkins King for this year at PHS.
Several births to announce this week--A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Billy Burr of Piggott Feb. 14 at Paragould, and they've named the new arrival Kevin Ray Burr; Mr. and Mrs. Jim O'Dell of Pollard had a baby girl Feb. 11 at St. Bernard's in Jonesboro, and they've named her Heather Elise; Randy and Janet (Howell) Dennis were blessed with a baby girl Feb. 13 at Arkansas Methodist in Paragould and they've named her Kenna Diane Dennis; Jim and Hope Nelson of Piggott had a new baby daughter Feb. 17, also at Arkansas Methodist in Paragould, and they've named their new arrival Jamie Louise Nelson and finally--Mr. and Mrs. Michael Swink of Piggott were blessed with a new baby boy back on Dec. 15 at Arkansas Methodist in Paragould. They've named their new arrival Kody Michael Swink.
In sports, the Mohawks fell to Brookland and Marmaduke to end the regular season and will play Clay County Central in the first round of the district tournament at Hoxie.
