Team members from several schools, and adult workshops, took part in this year's individual competitions. The day also included a new competition, as four squads took part in team basketball with the games played in the PHS middle gym.
A large crowd of spectators turned out for the annual event, with volunteer help provided by students from PHS and members of the Spoke-N-Word Christian Motorcycle Club. Members of the club have been involved in the local effort for many years, serving as both volunteer helpers and cheerleaders for the dozens of athletes.
The day began with the grand march, as the teams paraded into the gym to the applause of an appreciative crowd. The participants then took part in the opening ceremonies prior to beginning the various competitions.
The Special Olympians on hand were from schools and adult day facilities from across Clay, Greene and Lawrence counties.
Organizer Theresa Book offered her thanks to the organizers and the many volunteers that made the local effort possible. She also noted her appreciation to those who purchased items, and made donations, toward the Special Olympics in Area One.
