Simple pleasures

Wednesday, March 10, 2010
A bright sun rises into a grey sky, dazzling the viewer with diadems of crystal brilliance emanating from a light covering of frost. Later, the grass, now bright green after a long winter of ice-covered beige, will warm one's feet. Early morning sounds of bird-house occupiers, having returned from their tropical sojourn, blend with other business having to do with procreation, and the eternal search for food. Untold effects upon the spirits of mankind, add to the myriads of simple pleasures from which we may choose in thankfulness to the Creator of Springs.

Often we may derive a sense of true joy when we reflect upon His gifts as they bring wellness to our souls. They bring us to reflection which sets the stage for gratitude in our rejoicing. And that brings us to counting the blessings of life itself.

We might ask ourselves "have I made a difference?" in our interactions with our fellows. A helping hand never slaps or becomes a fist. One must not be surprised when our neighbor happens to know more than we do. Do we keep trying when he first attempts to make a situation better fails? Is there not the reward of pleasure when we give of ourselves without seeking receiving anything? Altruism is compatible with pleasure-seeking-proved by scientific evidence when extending into the animal kingdom.

What of past and lingering feelings that resulted from knowing one has done a good job, had his dreams come true, reached a goal, has loved and been loved in return? There is true joy when one knows his offspring have done him proud and is privileged to witness the way that extends into the third and fourth generations. (Even old age has its share of simple pleasures!)

Life -- or what we make of it -- is good. We'll be seeing you around for a while, we hope. Let's hang in there..
