Mohawk football practice got underway Wednesday, Aug. 11 as the Tribe prepares for their season opener against Marked Tree. The Piggott Mohawks are now in their second week of practice, but are meeting a little earlier than usual due to the hot conditions. After convening their first practice at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11 the coaching staff decided to back things up and have the team roll out at 8:00.

The Tribe has over 30 on the roster for the senior team, and will be playing their season opener at home Saturday, Sept. 3 as they play host to the Marked Tree Indians.

With the extreme heat this year Coach Dave Hendrix has been careful to protect his players from overexposure. The early practice times, a sprinkler system dubbed "Mohawk Falls" and frequent breaks have been the order of the day.

Meanwhile, the seventh grade team has been practicing late in the afternoon under coach Michael Harrell, and the junior high team has been practicing from 7 to 9 p.m.

Our annual preview of the Mohawks may be found in the Aug. 25 print edition of The Piggott Times.
