Shop owner George Forrest (left) tries a sample of Hamilton's work.
A special guest soda jerk helped out Thursday, Aug. 5 at The Way It Was Ice Cream Parlor in Piggott. Owner George Forrest welcomed visitors Mr. and Mrs. Al Hamilton, and friends, of North Little Rock as they visited Piggott for a tour of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum. Hamilton, a 1956 graduate of Piggott High School, worked at Potter's Drug Store during his teenage years and served ice cream from the same fountain and parlor that are still in service today. Hamilton, the son of the late Clarence A. Hamilton and Eunice Hamilton, lived on North Fourth Street in Piggott. His mother is approaching her 101st birthday and will mark that milestone in October. Hamilton is a CPA in North Little Rock. His temporary boss, Forrest, noted that his pay for the day was "all he can eat." The ice cream parlor is located in the former Seal's Pharmacy building and utilizes the same soda fountain that has been in use for decades. (Times photos/Laura Cole)

In Hamilton's youth being a soda jerk was a sought-after job.
