Piggott mayor, alderman races to be contested

Wednesday, August 25, 2010
Piggott voters will have three contested municipal races to decide in the upcoming General Election, as the period for candidates to file ended at noon Tuesday, Aug. 24.

In the past few weeks all the incumbent city officials facing re-election filed to seek another term. That included Mayor Gerald Morris, city clerk Ramona Magee, city attorney John Lingle and incumbent aldermen Carl Birmingham and Tommy Risinger.

Danny Brown filed for mayor of Piggott last week and will face Morris for the position Nov. 2. Prior to Tuesday's deadline, Mike Cook filed to face Birmingham for the alderman seat in north ward, position two. Also filing his petition was Jamey Parks, who is opposing Risinger for alderman position from south ward, position two.

The terms of the other two aldermen, Lester Edwards Jr. and Jim Poole, do not expire until the end of 2011. This marks the first election cycle in which only two of the aldermen are up for re-election after the city council voted to stagger the terms two years ago.

County Clerk Pat Poole also noted the final day to register for the 2010 General Election is Monday, Oct. 4, as Arkansas law stipulates that voters register at least 30 days prior to the election.

Those who want more information on voter registration or the municipal election may contact the clerk's office at 598-2813.
