Three races in the Democratic run-off Sept. 8, as Dale Bumpers faces Orval Faubus for governor, Jim Harrell and Dr. Bob Riley contend for Lt. Governor and it will be either Frank Carpenter or Doug Batey for Clay County Sheriff. The annual Clay County Fair is at hand, along with the Labor Day picnics in Rector and McDougal. Meanwhile, the annual Piggott Fourth of July Picnic grossed nearly $26,000 according to Kenneth Mowery. Expenses were around $16,500 with a net profit of $9,463.
Speaking of the fair, the annual rodeo will feature several local cowboys--including Barry Kilbreath of Piggott, who was pictured in action on a bull called McKee's #113 at a rodeo held earlier in the year in Fredericktown, Mo.
At the Carolyn Theater this week--"The Reivers" and one of my favorites, "The Cheyenne Social Club."
School is in session in Piggott although not all the construction is complete. PES students were shown moving Lola Gibson's classroom items into storage until her room could be finished. This week also featured photos of all the first grade classes at PES, noting it was one day down and 12 years to go. The teachers were Mrs. Haynes, Mrs. McFarlin, Mrs. Wilbourn and Mrs. Abney for the class of 1983. And, it was reported that moon rocks brought back by Apollo 11 will be on display at this year's Mid-South Fair.
In sports, the Mohawks will open the football season under a new coach as they visit Manila Friday night. And it was reported that former Mohawk, and Razorback, Gary Adams played in a pre-season exhibition game for the Philadelphia Eagles against the Detroit Lions.
1980
Mr. and Mrs. William N. Holifield have recently returned from a 15 day visit to the Holy Land. Meanwhile, Piggott Lodge #545 held recognition night. It was also reported that due to the extreme heat of this summer additional funding has been secured through BRAD to help seniors deal with the problem.
Calls Chapel EHC recently hosted a birthday party for resident of the Home For the Golden Years with entertainment provided by Bea (Rhodes) Hitt and her fiddle. And, the Northeast Arkansas Rod and Gun Club will host an archery tournament in the coming week.
At the Carolyn Theater this week--The Ninja, unholy master of terror. Only one man can stop them..it's Chuck Norris in "The Octagon."
Births to announce include a new baby daughter for Mr. and Mrs. Larry Featherston, a little Lynna Courtney Featherston was born Aug. 29 at Doctor's Hospital in Poplar Bluff. And Mr. and Mrs. Oran Nicholas of Pollard will mark their 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 7. The couple was married Sept. 5, 1930 at Pollard.
On HBO this week--"10" and "Thunderball" while patrons were informed that the monthly charge for the movie channel was going up to $9.50 beginning Sept. 1.
In sports, sophomore Donnie Morrison of Piggott will be starting at linebacker this year for the ASU Indians. The former Mohawk, who is majoring in finance, will first see action Sept. 6 as the Indians begin their season against UT-Martin.
1985
A total of 976 kids are enrolled in Piggott schools, including 62 seniors and 79 kindergartners. Actually, the senior class is the smallest in size, while the first and 10th grades tied for the most with 87 each. This week also included a feature on local teen rodeo cowboy Rodney Crossfield, who was pictured training with Barry Kilbreath (see 1970). And Kenneth Renshaw reported that Halley's Comet would return later this year.
The flag was raised over the new Piggott Middle School for the first time, with Brandee Hartsfield and Shelly Eldridge doing the honors under the supervision of Linda Rouse. And Carrie Holifield was honored on her 89th birthday, and pictured as part of five generations of her family with daughter Alma Mae Blake, granddaughter Millicent Hinkle, great-grandson Lane Hinkle and great-great-grandson Seth Hinkle.

The history of the ladies auxiliary of the Davison and Sherman Hayes Post #4517 of the VFW was reviewed. The local auxiliary was founded Sept. 7, 1946 and the first president was Alzada Johnstone. Meanwhile, Dalton Mobley, Route 2, brought in a banana muskmelon he had raised that was 18-and-a-half inches long.
The Mohawks are set to open against Westside and the offense was pictured, including linemen Lee Holifield, Sam Williams, Greg Mallard, Gary Don Moody, Tony Ruhl and Matt Hopkins. The backs and receivers included Troy Crawford, Michael Lewis, Randy Low, Deron Pollard, Todd Doty and Ricky Wheat.
1990
Gubernatorial candidates Bill Clinton and Sheffield Nelson were on hand for the Rector Labor Day Picnic this week in time. Meanwhile, the Grand Champion steer at the annual Clay County Fair was shown by Scott Lovelady of Greenway. Also pictured was the Grand Champion nanny goat of Heath Wilbourn of Pollard. It was also reported that former Piggott businessman Marvin Taylor had died in Alabama. He was 77. Taylor was a former alderman, volunteer fireman and served as fire chief. He and his wife had operated a business in Piggott for over 30 years.
PHS is now offering Russian II by way of a new satellite system installed recently. Supervising the class is Mary Ann Crowson. Meanwhile, 150 gathered in St. Francis Aug. 26 to mark the 90th birthday of Ida Culp.
Kids that attend the daycare operated by Faye Causey, and her daughter Jerri, visited the Clay County Fair. Making the trip were Blake and Adam Turnstill, Mandi Thomas, Ashley Ruminer, Erin St. Cin, Amanda Ort, Rachel Mullins, Brian Seal and Lindsay Holland.
Jake Jones of Piggott won the toddler boy contest at the Rector Labor Day Picnic, while Trae Brawley of Piggott was the winner in the baby boy contest.
In sports, Craig Beck had 139 yards on 15 carries as the Mohawks won their season opener 26-0 over Westside..a welcome relief after losing four of the past five openers. Mark Sample and Jason Lance had big quarterback sacks for the defense and Michael Harrell intercepted a Warrior pass in the win.
