Newton Edward Wells, Sr., 86, of Greenway passed away Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at his home.

He was born Oct. 4, 1924, in Birdell and was the son of the late Bynum W. and Tuela "Perrin" Wells.

On Aug. 24, 1946, Valley P. Wright united Newton Wells and Dorothy Jean Hill in wedlock. Six children were born to this union.

Newton was a member of the Church of Christ. He attended at Greenway and was a faithful member until his health no longer permitted.

He was in the Army Air Force during World War II. He retired from the Soil Conservation Service after 30 years of service, taught school and worked as a farmer. He enjoyed gardening, flowers, wrote books and wrote many letters to family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clay Wells and wife Ruby; infant brother, Noel Wells, and grandson, Dustin Wells.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of the home; four sons, Danny Wells of Rector, Donald Wells and wife Judy of Greenway, Newton E. Wells, Jr. and wife Linda of Greenway and Joe Wells and wife Susan of Greenway; two daughters, Julia Wyss and husband Larry of Rector and Marilyn Small of Piggott; 13 grandchildren, Dian, David, Martin, Chloe, Bruce, Robbie, Paula, Nathan, Kiley, Andrea, Max, Matthew and Joshua, and seven great-grandchilderen, Jeremiah, Connor, Adrian, Hunter, Ethan, Keagan and Mollie. He also will be sadly missed by a host of other family and friends.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at Irby Funeral Home Chapel in Piggott with Bro. Jerry Morgan officiating. Greg Crouch presented a walk-through of Mr. Wells' career and read special poems. A military interment followed in Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector.
