Lady Mohawks visit tough Rivercrest squad
The Lady Mohawks had the daunting task of facing a skilled Rivercrest Lady Colt team Monday night at Wilson. The road trip was a tough one for Piggott, who fell on the night, 66-38.
Rivercrest, who came within a last second three-pointer of knocking off eventual Division II champion Nettleton last week in the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament, took control early and never looked back. The hosts led throughout: 19-11; 49-21 and 57-28.
"Rivercrest is good," Piggott head coach Alan Rabjohn said. "They're one of the best teams around. They're a tough matchup for anyone. You've got to be nearly perfect to play with them, especially at home."
Mallory Wright led the Lady Mohawks with 16 points on the night. Also scoring for Piggott were Jessica Scheffler 6, Breanna Wright 5, Allison Gurley 5, Hallie Vannada 4 and Kayla Morgan 2.
Rivercrest was led by 23 points from DaManique Brown. Samantha Jackson added 13 points for the hosts.
The Junior Lady Mohawks also fell in their meeting with Rivercrest, 49-32.
Piggott trailed throughout: 14-8; 30-16 and 38-27.
Missed opportunities at the free throw line came back to haunt the young Junior Lady Mohawks. Piggott connected on just 10 of 32 visits to the stripe on the night.
Micah Hobbs scored seven points for the Junior Lady Mohawks. Also scoring for Piggott were Jess Mallard 6, Bailey Pollard 4, Makalia Beck 4, Devyn Staples 4, McKenzie Hopkins 2, Shelby Chavez 2, Miranda Ermert 2 and Quest Emerson 1.
The Lady Mohawks are set to host county rival Corning in 3A-3 conference action beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday night in Piggott. The girls will return to the road next week, visiting Tuckerman beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12.
