Harmon's big shot lifts Rector over Marked Tree
Allison Harmon has had a big impact in the early success for the Rector Lady Cougars. The 6-1 senior has been a juggernaut on the defensive end, swatting away shots and changing countless others inside. Monday, Harmon made the difference with her offense, sinking the game-winning shot from 10 feet out as the buzzer in Rector's 51-49 victory over the hosting Marked Tree Lady Indians.
The thrilling win was the third meeting between the two teams, with the Lady Cougars picking up a 2-1 advantage in the series.
Rector fell behind early, as the Lady Indians started the game off with a 20-12 advantage. Sophomore Kendal Gunn scored eight points in the second frame to help the Lady Cougars close the gap to 30-28 at intermission. The contest remained tight from there, with the teams going into the fourth frame knotted up at 39 points apiece.
With the win, the Lady Cougars improved to 19-4 overall and 5-4 in 2A-3 conference play.
Gunn's 23 points was a game-high. Harmon finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks in the victory. Also scoring for Rector were Jessica Scott 5, Heather Scott 3, Bailey Haney 2, Vanessa Jones 2, Kelsey Wynn 2, Kelli Fowler 2 and Kaitlyn Essman 2.
Marked Tree was led by 17 points from Jay Perry and 16 points from Poohnu Perry.
Rector also edged Marked Tree in junior girls' action, 28-27.
The Lady Cougars are set to host Maynard beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday. The girls are slated to host Riverside beginning at 6 p.m. Monday.
