Cougars notch important victories
The Cougars picked up two important victories last week, topping Riverside and Walnut Ridge.
Rector spoiled homecoming for the hosting Bobcats Friday night in Walnut Ridge, securing a 54-42 win.
The Cougars got out to a big lead early, holding the hosts to just a free throw in the opening frame to lead 19-1. Rector led 31-15 at intermission, but saw Walnut Ridge fight back to cut it to single digits heading into the fourth, 42-35.
Senior Brandon Stevens had the hot hand for the Cougars, scoring his jersey number, 21, on the night. Stevens put up nine points in the first frame, burying a three-pointer in the first, second and third periods. Dillon Shelton added a pair of treys of his own, finishing with 11 points in the win. Also scoring for the Cougars were Mitchell Weber 9, Alec Scott 8, Denver Knight 4 and Ben Petty 1.
Zach Crisler's nine points led Walnut Ridge.
Rector improved to 15-7 overall with the win and is 8-4 in 2A-3 action.
The Junior Cougars were downed in their meeting with Walnut Ridge, 52-36.
Rector trailed throughout: 14-7; 20-15 and 34-22.
Nick Hardin scored 10 points for the Junior Cougars. Also scoring were Landen Crancer 8, Danny Hager 7, Lawson Ford 7, Garrett Buck 2 and Huston Highfill 2.
Knight and Shelton sank two clutch free throws each down the stretch as the Cougars were able to hold off Riverside, 58-54, in competitive 2A-3 action Tuesday, Jan. 17 in Rector.
It was a tight one throughout, with the Cougars leading by a possession through the first three frames: 17-15; 33-31 and 45-42.
Three Rector players scored in double figures, led by 12 points from Knight. Mitchell Weber and Shelton added 10 points each in the win. Also scoring for the Cougars were Stevens 9, Scott 9, Daniel White 6 and Petty 2.
Riverside was led by Logan Meurer's 18 points and 15 from Alteeno Sain.
The Junior Cougars were downed by Riverside, 59-25.
Rector trailed throughout: 9-5; 23-12 and 44-23.
Ford led Rector with 14 points on the night. Also scoring were Crancer 4, Highfill 4 and Hager 3.
Rector is slated to visit EPC beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. The Cougars are scheduled to host Marmaduke beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31.
