Lady Cougars top Cross Co., Walnut Ridge

The Lady Cougars notched two key victories in the past week.

Monday night, the girls from Rector cruised to a 20 point win over the hosting Cross County Lady Thunderbirds in Cherry Valley, 65-45.

The Lady Cougars were led by 15 points from sophomore Kendal Gunn. Senior Jessica Scott and sophomore Rebekah Scott each finished with 10 points to further the Rector cause.

Rector improved to 22-4 overall and 9-4 in conference 2A-3 with the victory.

The Junior Lady Cougars were also winners on the night, 38-22.

Victory over Walnut Ridge

The Lady Cougars were victorious over the visiting Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats Thursday in Rector, 66-53.

Rector got out to a slow start in the first quarter, falling behind 14-8. The girls in blue bounced back in the second frame, notching 20 points to move ahead 28-19, placing the momentum firmly in Rector's favor. The Lady Cougars moved ahead 53-31 heading into the fourth.

Gunn gave the Lady Cougars a spark which ignited the offense in the second and third, burying five threes during the two periods en route to finishing with a game-high 25 points. Jessica Scott added 11 in the win. Also scoring for Rector were Heather Scott 8, Bailey Haney 5, Vanessa Jones 4, Kaitlyn Essman 3, Lenae Haley 3, Allison Harmon 2, Kelsey Wynn 2, Johnna Lopez 2 and Rebekah Scott 1.

Rector took advantage of frequent trips to the line, sinking 24 of 34 at the stripe.

Caroline Kelley led Walnut Ridge with 10 points.

The Lady Cougars are battling for position within 2A-3. Attempting to lock up third place with victories in their final three 2A-3 contests, Rector is facing stiff competition to close out regular season league play, lining up EPC, BIC and Marmaduke. BIC is currently sitting atop the league, with Marmaduke a close second.

"It's tough going the next few weeks," Rector coach Matt Dean said. "We have to play better than we've been playing lately to get some wins out of our tough conference schedule. Our whole schedule has been about preparing for what's coming."

Junior Girls

The Junior Lady Cougars dropped a close one with Walnut Ridge, 41-36.

Rector trailed throughout: 10-7; 17-11 and 27-22.

Harmony Brown led the Junior Lady Cougars with 11 points in the loss. Also scoring were Marla Crancer 9, Grayson Crancer 9, Brittany Fair 4, Colby Lynch 3 and Tori Hill 2.

The Lady Cougars are set to visit EPC beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday. The girls are slated to host Marmaduke beginning at 6 p.m. Monday.
