Cougars fall to EPC, blast Cross County

The Cougars had a hard time Friday night in Lepanto, falling to conference leader East Poinsett County, 76-43.

The Cougars entered the night without junior standout Mitchell Weber, who is currently sidelined with a stress fracture in his foot. It is unknown when, or if, he will return this season.

The hosting Warriors led throughout: 16-11; 34-20 and 54-32.

Dillon Shelton sank four three-pointers on the night, finishing with 14 for Rector. Denver Knight added 11 in the loss. Also scoring for the Cougars were Brandon Stevens 6, Ben Petty 4, Alec Scott 3, Reed Weber 3 and Daniel White 2.

Jammar Sturdivant scored 29 points for the Warriors, leading four from EPC with double figures. Jori Ford added 12 points. Wendell Pritchett and A. J. Turner contributed 11 points each for the hosts.

Rector fell to 16-8 overall and 9-5 in conference 2A-3.

Stats were incomplete for the junior high matchup, but the Junior Cougars were downed by the unbeaten conference leader Junior Warriors.

Cross County Win

The Cougars imposed their will upon host Cross County Jan. 24 in Cherry Valley, having no trouble en route to a 63-20 thrashing. Rector got out to a 17-2 lead in the first frame and didn't look back. The Cougars were in front 36-11 at intermission and 48-16 through three quarters.

Knight led the way for Rector with a game-high 18 points. Shelton added 14 in the win. Also scoring were White 8, Stevens 6, Scott 6, Petty 4, Dustin Sparks 3, Reed Weber 2 and Mitchell Weber 2.

Junior Boys Win

The Junior Cougars cruised to a 45-16 win over Cross County. Rector flew out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter. The Junior Cougars led 24-8 at intermission and 38-13 through three quarters.

Nick Hardin and Lawson Ford led Rector with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Also scoring for the Junior Cougars were Landen Crancer 9, Danny Hager 8, Garret Buck 4 and Huston Highfill 2.

The Cougars are set to visit Buffalo Island Central beginning at 6 p.m. Friday night at Monette. The senior boys are slated to host Piggott for Senior Night beginning at 6 p.m. Feb. 9. The Junior Cougars are set to begin play in the district tournament beginning Feb. 6.
