Lady Mohawks in action
The Lady Mohawks were downed on the road in action at Harrisburg Thursday night, 53-16.
Stingy Harrisburg defense hindered the girls from Piggott in the early going, as the ladies managed just four points in each of the first two frames. The Lady Hornets led throughout: 14-4; 29-8 and 45-15.
Mallory Wright led the Lady Mohawks with 10 points on the night. Breanna Wright added four points. Sydney Tarno finished with two points for Piggott.
Harrisburg was led by Shelby Broglen and Makaleigh Riddle, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Junior Girls Win
The Junior Lady Mohawks pulled out a 38-35 win in their meeting with Harrisburg.
Shelby Chavez and Miranda Ermert made clutch baskets down the stretch for Piggott, with each scoring four points in the final frame as the Junior Lady Mohawks held on for the victory.
Piggott trailed 10-6 after the first frame, but battled back to move ahead 21-19 at halftime. The teams were tied at 28-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
Chavez led Piggott with 10 points in the win. Also scoring for the Junior Lady Mohawks were Devyn Staples 8, Ermert 7, McKenzie Hopkins 6, Bailey Pollard 4 and Jess Mallard 3.
Keely Edwards scored 13 for Harrisburg.
The Lady Mohawks hosted Hoxie Jan. 23 in Piggott. The ladies fell to the visiting Lady Mustangs, 61-49.
Piggott trailed throughout: 15-8; 32-22 and 45-36.
A slow start hurt the Lady Mohawks, who were forced to play from behind much of the night.
"We didn't start out like we needed to," head coach Alan Rabjohn said. "When you break it down, they only outscored us by two points in the second half. That first quarter hurt us."
Free throws were also a factor in the outcome. Hoxie made 24 of 36 attempts at the line while Piggott finished 12 of 24 at the stripe.
Breanna Wright led the Lady Mohawks with 17 points on the night. Mallory Wright finished with 14 points. Also scoring for Piggott were Breanna Chandler 8, Hallie Vannada 5, Tarno 3 and Jessica Scheffler 2.
Hoxie was led by 20 points from Cayley Rosson and 19 from Maddison Woodard.
Junior Girls Win
The Junior Lady Mohawks cruised to a 40-12 win in their meeting with Hoxie.
Pollard scored six points in the opening period to help push Piggott to a 13-2 advantage. The lead grew to 23-8 at intermission and 33-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
Pollard notched a game-high 10 points for the Junior Lady Mohawks. Also scoring for Piggott were Hopkins 7, Staples 5, Chavez 5, Makalia Beck 4, Quest Emerson 3, Micah Hobbs 3, Ermert 2 and Mallard 1.
The Lady Mohawks are set to host Manila beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Junior Lady Mohawks are slated to begin play in the junior district tournament Saturday at Harrisburg. The junior ladies are set to face host Harrisburg in the first round, with the second round set for Wednesday. The senior girls will host CRA for Senior Night beginning at 6 p.m. Feb. 7. The senior girls will also be in action at Rector starting at 6 p.m. Feb. 9.
