PHS girls host Manila
The Lady Mohawks were defeated at home Thursday night, falling to the visiting Lady Lions of Manila, 57-30. Manila got out to a 20-7 lead and never looked back, leading 29-19 at intermission and 43-20 heading into the fourth.
Mallory Wright paced Piggott with a game-high 18 points, including 15 in the first half. Also scoring for the Lady Mohawks were Breanna Wright 8, Sydney Tarno 2 and Melinda Blackmon 2.
Manila was led by the duo of Kailen Shelton, 17 points, and Emily Cook, who finished with 14.
The Lady Lions opened the game with a 9-0 in the first four minutes of the contest, swinging the momentum firmly in their favor.
The Junior Lady Mohawks picked up a 37-27 win over Manila Thursday.
Piggott started slow, managing just one field goal in the first frame as the guests got out to a 12-4 advantage. The action picked up in the second stanza, though; as Bailey Pollard, Quest Emerson and Abby Holcomb scored three points each to help the Junior Lady Mohawks claw back within two possessions, 19-15, heading into halftime.
Piggott outscored Manila 13-4 in the third frame, led by six points in the period from Makalia Beck, to take a 28-23 advantage into the fourth.
Shelby Chavez came through for the balanced Junior Lady Mohawks down the stretch, scoring seven points in the fourth; including three of four from the free throw line.
Piggott outpaced Manila 22-8 in the second half for the successful comeback.
Chavez led the Junior Lady Mohawks with 11 points in the victory. Also scoring for Piggott were Beck 6, Pollard 6, Emerson 3, Devyn Staples 3, Holcomb 3, Miranda Ermert 2, McKenzie Hopkins 2 and Micah Hobbs 1.
The Junior Lady Mohawks advanced to the second round of the district tourney with a 40-20 whipping of the Tuckerman Lady Bulldogs Saturday at Harrisburg.
Piggott led throughout: 13-6; 21-10 and 29-18.
Beck led Piggott with nine points in the victory. Also scoring were Pollard 8, Staples 7, Ermert 6, Jess Mallard 2, Alexa DeHart 2, Ambrea Massey 2, Hopkins 1 and Madison Crittenden 1.
The senior girls will visit county rival Rector beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday for their final regular season contest.
