Cougars gain momentum with wins over M'duke, BIC
Rector drilled eight three-pointers, including seven in the first half, and went on to post a 58-41 victory over Buffalo Island Central, spoiling the Mustang's senior night Friday at the Mustang Athletic Complex in Monette.
Matt Mills' Cougars came out on fire, raining three's, including four in the opening quarter of play to grab an 18-9 lead heading into the second stanza. Dillon Shelton buried two threes in the opening frame, with Daniel White and Mitchell Weber adding one each in the opening period.
Rector increased its lead to 31-15 at the half, on the strength of continued sniping from beyond-the-arc. White sank two more triples with Mitchell Weber adding another.
BIC battled back after intermission behind the three-point shooting of Logan Dewitt, who hit three treys as the Mustangs cut the Cougar lead to 10 points midway through the third quarter. Rector halted the BIC rally with a critical four-point play by senior Brandon Stevens, who notched six points in the stanza. The Cougars took a 43-31 advantage into the final period of play.
The Cougars pulled away in the fourth quarter to claim the 17 point win.
Mitchell Weber led Rector with 13 points while White and Stevens added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Also scoring for the Cougars were Shelton 8, Ben Petty 6, Denver Knight 6 and Alec Scott 4.
Rector improved to 18-8 overall and 11-5 in 2A-3 with the victory.
BIC was led by Dewitt with a team-high 13 points. Dilynn Strickland added 12 points.
The Junior Cougars were downed by BIC, 45-34.
Rector hung tough with their hosts early, remaining within striking distance, 15-11, through the first frame. Landen Crancer led the Junior Cougars with five points in the opening stanza.
BIC clamped down defensively in the second quarter, holding Rector to just four points. The hosts went into halftime with a 24-15 lead.
The Junior Cougars fought back in the third. Garrett Buck went to work in the paint, scoring six points in the period as Rector cut the lead to five points, 30-25, heading into the fourth quarter.
BIC held on in the end, though, outscoring the Junior Cougars 15-9 to notch the victory.
Buck finished with 12 points, all in the second half, to pace Rector on the night. Lawson Ford added 11 points in the loss. Also scoring for Rector were Crancer 5, Huston Highfill 4 and Danny Hager 2.
Junior Boys Advance
The Junior Cougars topped Cross County, 56-41, Saturday in the opening round of the junior high district tournament at Riverside. Rector led throughout: 19-8; 26-14 and 38-27.
Ford drove home 11 points in the final frame to help seal the Junior Cougar victory. Ford finished the night with a game-high 24 points. Hager and Buck also reached double figures, netting 12 and 11, respectively. Crancer added eight points, while Nick Hardin scored two to round out the Rector totals.
The Junior Cougars will face top seed EPC at 7 p.m. Wednesday (tonight) in the second round.
The Cougars used a bug third quarter to defeat rival Marmaduke, 57-52, on Jan. 31 in Rector. The boys in blue trailed 31-26 at intermission, but outscored the visiting 'Hounds 15-4 in the pivotal frame to take a 41-35 advantage.
Balanced scoring was a major factor for the Cougars, who had four players record double figure scoring. Mitchell Weber led the way with 15 points in the win. Shelton added 12 points for Rector. Knight added 11 points on the night. Stevens contributed a double-double, scoring 10 and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Morgan Hawley netted a game-high 21 points for Marmaduke.
Marmaduke claimed the junior high contest, 52-44, in an extra frame.
The Senior Cougars are set to take the court for Senior Night Thursday in Rector. Rival Piggott will visit for an evening of action in boys and girls contests beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday.
