Lady Mohawks fall to CRA

Thursday, February 16, 2012

The Lady Mohawks fell behind early and were forced to play catch-up the rest of the evening during their Senior Night meeting with Crawley's Ridge Academy Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Piggott, ultimately falling to their guests, 56-46.

The Lady Mohawks started slow on the emotional evening, as the guests ran out to a 16-6 advantage.

Piggott fought back in the second frame, outscoring the visiting Lady Falcons 17-9 to close the first half just a basket short, 25-23. The Lady Mohawks were able to get to the charity stripe in the second period, scoring nine points in 13 trips to the stripe. Junior Mallory Wright also found the range from beyond the arc in the stanza, sniping in a pair of three-pointers to further boost the Piggott offense.

The momentum swung back to CRA in the second half, as the visitors were able to capitalize on the mid-range game. CRA moved ahead39-32 heading into the fourth quarter.

"You look back at that first quarter and can see where we didn't do ourselves any favors," PHS head coach Alan Rabjohn said. "When you get down like that and then fight back, it takes a toll, if not physically then mentally. We were able to get back into it, but we couldn't sustain it when CRA went on their runs in the second half."

Mallory Wright finished with 20 points for the Lady Mohawks. Breanna Wright added 13 points on the night. Also scoring for Piggott were Sydney Tarno 9, Hallie Vannada 2, Jessica Scheffler 1 and Breanna Chandler 1.

Ashlyn Abbot led CRA with 22 points. Audrey Hicks and Lindsey Killough added 13 points each.

The Lady Mohawks were slated to face fifth seed and host Corning in the 3A-3 District Tournament Tuesday night in Corning. A win would advance Piggott, the eighth seed, to face fourth seeded Earle at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the second round. The winner will face top seed Rivercrest at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and earn an automatic bid to the regional tournament. The district final is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Corning.
