Rector girs fall to Marked Tree
The Lady Cougars went down-to-the-wire in their quarterfinal meeting with the Marked Tree Lady Indians Thursday at Cherry Valley. Rector came up just short in their quest to reach the regional tourney, falling to Marked Tree, 59-58, in the qualifying matchup.
The Lady Cougars entered the final frame with a 49-44 advantage. Kelsey Wynn hit a three-pointer for Rector in the first 10 seconds of the stanza, but the Lady Indians went on a 13-4 run over the following seven minutes, as the Lady Cougar offense struggled. Marked Tree had a size advantage inside, limiting Rector's rebounding throughout, especially down the stretch.
Kendal Gunn drove coast-to-coast and finished with a reverse layup on a drive down the right baseline with 20.4 seconds remaining to bring Rector within a single point, 59-58. The Lady Cougars sent Marked Tree's Jay Perry to the line for a one-in-one opportunity which clanked off the iron and was pulled down by Gunn. Rector, out of timeouts, fought Marked Tree's press down the court. Senior Jessica Scott got the ball to Gunn on the outside, but the sophomore's three-point attempt wouldn't go down. Marked Tree snatched the rebound as the final horn sounded, bringing the game to an end.
The two teams continued their string of close, hard-fought contests with the outing. Rector led 17-16 after the first quarter, but went into intermission trailing, 31-27.
"It was a game between two teams who both wanted to win," Rector coach Matt Dean said. "They (Marked Tree) came out ready to play and so did we. It's been a tough game every time we've played each other this year. We match up pretty well, but they had the advantage on the boards. I thought that was the difference in the game."
Gunn netted a game-high 25 points for the Lady Cougars. Jessica Scott and Heather Scott added 10 points each on the night. Also scoring for Rector were Wynn 8, Anna Blackshare 2, Kelly Fowler 2 and Kaitlyn Essman 1.
Poohnu Perry led Marked Tree with 15 points. Lexi Perry and Laflora Hillis added 12 and 11, respectively.
