Dillon Shelton dials in the jumper. Shelton had a big night for the Cougars in their state-qualifying victory over Cedar Ridge Wednesday at the regional tournament in Monette.

The Cougars were the talk of the 2A-North Regional Tournament at Monette, upending 2A-2 number one seed Cedar Ridge in the opening round of the event, 52-48, to advance not only to the tourney semifinals, but also secure a berth in next week's state tournament at Newark.

Rector knocked off Cedar Ridge, who came into the contest as the number two team in Arkansas 2A, thanks to strong outings by senior big man Brandon Stevens and junior guard Dillon Shelton. Shelton led the Cougars with 17 points on the night. Stevens finished with 15, overcoming some early foul trouble.

The game was a huge win for the Cougars, sparking the squad as they move forward in postseason play.

The Cougars will next face conference foe Riverside in the tourney semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Monette.
