Cougars reach 2A quarterfinals
The Cougars advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 2A State Basketball Tournament Wednesday in Newark, holding on for a 59-56 win over Two Rivers.
Rector held on for the win with clutch free throws down the stretch. Sophomore Alec Scott made three of four from the stripe during crunch time with Denver Knight adding two free throws with the game on the lines. Scott also added a runner in the frame, with Dillon Shelton knocking down a trey and Brandon Stevens scoring inside to round out the Cougars' output in the fourth.
Rector led 12-9 after the first quarter and 30-24 at intermission. The Cougars were in front 47-42 at the start of the fourth, but Two Rivers' Jordan Chancellor deposited eight of his game-high 22 points in the final stanza, closing the gap.
Knight led three Cougars scoring in double figures, netting 16 in the nailbiter. Mitchell Weber and Shelton added 14 and 10, respectively.
The Cougars are set to 2A-East number one seed Mountain Pine, who advanced with a 61-49 win over Horatio, at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Newark.
