Cougars advance to state semifinals

Saturday, March 3, 2012

The Rector Cougars continued their tremendous post-season play with a thrilling 54-46 win Friday night over Mountain Pine in the state Class AA tournament at Cedar Ridge.

The Cougars now face Junction City in a semifinal game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Junction City advanced earlier with a quarterfinal victory over Marked Tree.

With a win, the Cougars will move on to the state title game next weekend at Hot Springs. They would face either Clarendon or fellow conference foe East Poinsett County, the defending state champion.

Rector overcame a sluggish start against a strong Mountain Pine team. They trailed by seven at the half but stormed back with a great third quarter. The Cougars took the lead in the late going and held on with some timely free throw shooting.

More details of this game, and others in the state tournament, will appear in next week's edition of the Clay County Times-Democrat.
