New supt. hired at Piggott
The Piggott School District will have a new superintendent in the 2012-2013 school year. Charnelsa "Charlie" Powell was hired by the Piggott School Board to fill the position during a series of special meetings held last week. Powell was offered a two-year contract with an annual salary of $80,000.
Powell, a native of Corning, has worked in education for 22 years and currently is employed as high school principal at Hoxie School District. She has been employed at Hoxie for the last 15 years, having worked previously at Arkansas State University and Harrisburg School District.
Powell's degrees include a BSE in Mathematics, MS in Mathematics and Specialist in Secondary Principalship.
"I'm excited and looking forward it," Powell said of her new position. "I'd like to thank the School Board for the confidence they've shown in me. I will perform the duties of superintendent to the best of my abilities."
Powell and her husband, Tom, have two daughters, Hannah, 11, and Macey, 6.
On Monday, March 19, the Board voted to relieve superintendent Ed Winberry of day-to-day duties effective immediately. Winberry has been placed on an "as-needed" basis for the remainder of his contract. Winberry submitted his letter of resignation to the Board in January, with a date of effectiveness of June, following the completion of school.
Elementary principal Leean Mann has been named interim superintendent for the remainder of the current school year, in addition to fulfilling her duties as principal.
