Head Start riders support St. Jude
Young riders at Piggott Head Start and Early Head Start took to their "hogs" Friday to lend their support to the annual St. Jude Trike-A-Thon fundraiser. Whether riding tricycles, mini bicycles, tractors, scooters or wagons, over 50 students took part in the day's event.
Friday concluded a week-long activity, which saw students learn important safety measures for riding tricycles and other wheeled toys through educational materials provided by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at Memphis. The children and their families participated also in a fundraising campaign which raised over $500 for St. Jude, to help further the children's hospital's effort to improve treatment and cures for conditions through research and treatments.
"St. Jude is a wonderful thing and we're happy to be able to help them in any way," Piggott Head Start executive director Janene Halcomb said. "The Trike-A-Thon is good way for us to do that, and it's fun for the kids here."
Fun was certainly had by the Head Start and Early Head Start participants. Laughter rang through the spring air as the children took to a wide assortment of rides on a warm, sunny day. Older, more experienced riders took to bicycles with training wheels, as younger students sat atop multi-wheeled wonders featuring different colorful characters and themes. Students were able to ride their own toys or make use of those offered through Head Start. The youngsters also displayed good manners, with toy sharing a common occurrence throughout the day's rides.
Several parents were present during the Trike-A-Thon, lending a hand where needed and just enjoying the fun atmosphere.
"It's a great day for something like this," said Jamey Parks, who attended with his son, James. "The kids are having a good time and it's all for a worthy cause."
Community support also was present with Piggott State Bank, represented by Paula O. Blackwell and Jim Poole, as a sponsor of the event.
"We appreciate Piggott State Bank and their donations," Halcomb said. "They're always good to help us with things like this."
Through the wonder of children, with help from parents and the community, helping other kids while having fun, the 2012 Trike-A-Thon was a success for Piggott Head Start and Early Head Start. Halcomb said the facility will continue to take part in the annual event in the future.
