The Lady Cougars continue to build momentum, rolling through opposition on the softball diamond to improve to 11-0 overall and 8-0 in 2A-3 conference action.
The Lady Cougars surged in the seventh inning in a 5-2 come-from-behind win over 2A-3 rival Buffalo Island Central Thursday at Monette.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the final frame, Rector's offense woke with a fury. Catcher Kaitlyn Essman got the Blue Thunder going with a one-out single, followed by courtesy runner Amy DeMent, who went in for Essman, stealing second. Right fielder Johnna Lopez came through with a single to move put runners on the corners. Lenae Haley came up to bat next, opening the game up with a hard-hit single to plate DeMent and Lopez and give the Lady Cougars a 3-2 lead. Centerfielder Anna Blackshare added the exclamation mark with a two-run, two-out homerun, sending the ball over the fence en route to putting Rector ahead 5-2.
The Lady Cougar defense hung tough in the bottom of the seventh, preserving the win. Rector handed BIC their first loss of the season with the emotional victory.
Essman hit an RBI single in the fourth, tying the game at 1-1.
BIC moved ahead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth.
Blackshare finished 1-3 with a two-run shot. Essman had a good day, going 2-3 with an RBI. Haley finished 1-1 with a pair of RBIs. Amanda Bradford, Fowler and Kendal Gunn added one hit each in the win.
Rector's latest roughshod run was on the road at Lepanto Monday, where the Lady Cougars imposed their will upon the hosting EPC Lady Warriors, 22-0 and 17-2, in a mercy-ruled doubleheader.
Junior hurler Kelly Fowler needed just two innings to pick up the win in the first outing, as the Lady Cougar offense went to work early and often. Fowler threw a no-no in the abbreviated contest, finishing with six strikeouts in the 22-0 victory.
Rector utilized solid hitting with erratic EPC defense, allowing every Lady Cougar to reach base safely in the contest.
Freshman Brittany Fair notched her second win in the latter half of the twinbill, allowing two runs off five hits while ringing up four batters.
It was a veritable hit parade for the Lady Cougars on the afternoon. Bradford led the way, finishing 7-7 overall with eight RBIs. Blackshare finished 6-7 with four RBIs. Fowler, Courtney Shepard, Gunn and Essman notched five hits each. Lopez, Haley and Lindsey Ford contributed three hits each for Rector.
