Lady Mohawks outlast Walnut Ridge
Freshman Miranda Ermert had her biggest hit as a Lady Mohawk last week, outing a single through the gap to score the game-winning run in Piggott's home victory over Walnut Ridge Tuesday, 9-8. Piggott led 8-5 heading into the seventh frame, which saw the visiting Lady Bobcats score three runs in the visitor half of the inning to knot the game up at 8-8.
The day was filled with big plays by the Lady Mohawks.
Breanna Wright got things started off strong with a two-run homerun blast to centerfield, joining her sister Mallory in a jaunt around the bases. Kacey Crossfield helped her cause as the winning pitcher, finishing 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Allison Gurley had two hits and an RBI in the win. Also picking up hits for Piggott were Mallory Wright, Taylor Davis, Melinda Blackmon and Breanna Chandler.
The game had not only an outburst of offense by the Lady Mohawks, but also was one of the best outings defensively for the squad, which finished the day with only two errors.
"That's a good win for us," Piggott head coach Nikki Speer said. "We had some big hits that got us going on offense, and I thought that was probably the best game we've played defensively. I thought we played with a lot of energy and you could tell we were having fun out there."
Up next, the Lady Mohawks are set to host Hoxie beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday. Piggott will return the favor at 4:30 p.m. Monday, by visiting Hoxie in action the road. The girls are slated to host the Armorel Lady Tigers beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
