Brittany Fair drives in the winning run against Marmaduke Monday

Freshman Brittany Fair came through in a big way for the Lady Cougars Monday afternoon, hitting a two-out RBI double to give Rector the victory at home over the Marmaduke Lady Greyhounds. Fair's timely hit plated brought leftfielder Johnna Lopez all-the-way home from first base.

The Lady Cougars led much of the afternoon, with their biggest advantage being 6-0 through the bottom of the fourth, but Marmaduke came alive on offense down the stretch. The girls in blue saw an 11-7 advantage erased in the top of the seventh, as the Lady Greyhounds peppered the outfield with fly balls and came up with just-out-of-reach line drives to plate four runs in the inning, knotting the game up at 11-11.

Rector scored three runs in the first inning. Centerfielder Anna Blackshare started things off with a single. Kelly Fowler doubled Blackshare home. Kendal Gunn followed with a single to score Fowler, and wound up stealing second and third. Courtney Shepard hit a ground ball to bring in Gunn, putting the Lady Cougars in front 3-0 in the first.

Rector added three runs in the bottom of the third. Blackshare led off with a triple, and was brought home with an RBI single by senior Amanda Bradford, Gunn scored Bradford on a triple, then came home on a passed ball.

Leading 6-2, Rector plated three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Gunn hit a fly ball to right which was dropped, bringing in Fowler. Shepard singled to bring in Amy DeMent, who was pinch running for Bradford after she had been hit by a pitch. Shepard got caught trying to steal second, but the diversion allowed Gunn to score from third base, making it 9-2 in favor of the Lady Cougars.

Marmaduke scored five runs in the top of the sixth, closing to within two, 9-7.

Fair, subbed in as designated hitter, doubled in the sixth inning to bring home Lopez, who had drawn a walk to lead off the inning. Fair would later come home on a passed ball at third base, making 11-7.
