Friday, May 11, 2012

The surging Lady Cougars advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 2A Softball State Tournament at Junction City High School with a 4-2 victory over Magazine Thursday.

Junior Kelly Fowler had a strong pitching performance for Rector. Fowler allowed two runs on four hits while ringing up seven and walking two.

The Lady Cougars continued to receive solid play from their young lineup. Sophomores Johnna Lopez and Kendal Gunn led the squad at the plate, both finishing 2-3 on Thursday. Lopez scored twice and Gunn once in the opening round win. Anna Blackshare and Tarryn Tracy drove in a run each for Rector.

The win improved the Lady Cougars to 21-6 on the season.

Rector is set to meet Magnet Cove Friday. A win there would move the girls to the semifinals at noon Saturday to meet either Junction City or Marked Tree. The state finals are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19 at Bogel Park on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
