Lady Mohawks in Tournament Play
The Piggott Lady Mohawks took part in the Christmas tournament at Brookland High School the week prior to the holiday, with both the senior and junior girls in action.
The senior Lady Mohawks took on the host Brookland Lady Bearcats in their first game of the round-robin bracket and fell 68-35. Bailey Pollard paced the Tribe's offensive attack on the night with 8 points while Kacey Crossfield and Shelby Chavez each finished with 6. The Lady Bearcats were led on the game by Jordan Maynard with 17 points.
The Tribe next took on the Lady Bulldogs of South Pemiscot County, (Steele, Mo.) in their second game and fell by a final of 60-51. The Mohawks were led by Mallory Wright with 10 points on the game, while Sydney Tarno and Chavez each finished with 9. For the Lady Bulldogs the attack was not so balanced, as they were led by Alisha Campbell with 31 and Carrie Shephard with 23. Together they accounted for 54 of the South Pem points.
The Lady Mohawks wrapped up the Christmas tournament with a 62-31 loss to 4A Gosnell. On the game the Tribe was led by Wright, Jessica Scheffler and Chavez with 6 points each. The Lady Pirates were paced on the night by Kamahri Soward in the win.
The Junior Lady Mohawks faced-off with a familiar conference foe in their first round game, as they dropped a 51-29 decision to Rivercrest. The Tribe was led on the game by Devyn Staples and Colby Crossfield with 10 points each, while the Lady Colts were paced by Krysten Vornes with 15.
In their second round game the junior Mohawks took on the Lady Pirates of Gosnell and fell by a final of 38-29. Crossfield was top scorer for the Tribe with 9 points, while Ambrea Massey finished with 8. Gosnell was led on the game by Krishona Hill with 17.
The junior girls did end the tournament, and the first half of their season, on a high note as they thumped the Kennett Lady Indians 42-15. The Tribe got a 13 point game from Peyton Wilson, while Crossfield finished with 9, to notch the win. For Kennett, they had a cold night from the floor and were led by Carissa Oliver with just 6 points.
The junior and senior girls are scheduled to be in action Thursday, Jan.3 as they visit Corning. They'll then have a week off to get ready for Osceola, and will host the Lady Seminole for a conference set Thursay, Jan. 10 at PHS. They'll also be hosting Rivercrest Friday, Jan. 14.
