Lady Mohawks Split with Corning

The Piggott Lady Mohawks visited Corning Thursday, Jan. 3 and dropped two out of three games to their hosts. The senior and seventh grade girls fell in their contests with the Lady Bobcats, while the junior girls held on for a two point win.

Senior girls

The Lady Mohawks rolled into the new year with a trip to Corning last Thursday, but fell to the potent Lady Bobcats by a final score of 65-31.

Leading the way for the Tribe in the loss was Bailey Pollard and Jessica Scheffler with 8 points each, while Mallory Wright had 7, and Kacey Crossfield, Sydney Tarno, Breanna Chandler and Shelby Chavez had 2 points each. Pacing the Corning attack was Shayna Casinger with 18.

As a team the Lady Mohawks converted on just 6 of 12 free-throws, while the Lady Bobcats made 34 trips to the charity stripe and converted on 20 of those attempts.

Junior girls

The junior Lady Mohawks got a 14 point performance from MaKalia Beck, as they beat the junior Bobcats 32-30 Thursday night at Corning. Along with Beck's 14, the Tribe also got an 8 point night from Devyn Staples in the win. Leading the way for the junior Bobcats was Kaytie Manatt with 14.

Scoring by quarters had the Lady Bobcats up 8-5 at the end of the first quarter, but the Tribe responded and outscored their hosts 13-5 in the second to take a halftime lead. In the third quarter the Lady Bobcats responded, and outscored the Tribe 10-7 in the frame. But, down the stretch the Mohawks swapped baskets with their hosts, as they squeaked out the two point decision.

Seventh grade

The seventh grade girls dropped their game at Corning 37-19 last Thursday. Leading the young Mohawks in scoring was Reagan Ralph with 9 while Hannah Powell finished with 4, Emily Massey had 3, Karsen Williams finished with 2 and Emily Trosper contributed 1 in the loss. Leading the way for Corning was Kaytie Manatt with 15 points.

All three girls' teams will be in action this Thursday, Jan. 10 as they host Osceola in conference play at PHS. The seventh grade game is set to tip-off at 5 p.m. with the junior game set to tip around 6:00. Monday, Jan. 14 the Tribe will host the Lady Colts of Rivercrest at PHS and Thursday, Jan. 17 the Tribe will visit Earle with just the senior and junior teams in action.
