Lady Mohawks Split Conference Games
The Piggott Lady Mohawks split a pair at home with Osceola Thursday, Jan. 10. Monday night the Tribe hosted Rivercrest and were swept by the Lady Colts.
The Lady Mohawks took on Osceola for the second time this year last Thursday at PHS, and held on for a 45-43 conference win. "We really needed that, after the Corning game we really needed a game like that," Coach Alan Rabjohn said of the win.
For the Tribe, they got off to a very slow start and found themselves trailing the Lady Seminole 13-5 after the first quarter. But, the Mohawks began to pick up the tempo in the second frame as they cut the lead to just three points by the halftime break as the score stood 17-14 in favor of Osceola.
The Lady Mohawks continued to wear their visitors down as the contest progressed, as they took a 34-31 lead by the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Jessica Scheffler had several big baskets, and rebounds, as the Tribe held off a late rally to take the win 45-43.
Leading the way for the Piggott squad was Mallory Wright with 19, while Scheffler finished with 9. The Lady Seminole were led by Kaisha Gibson with 17.
The junior Lady Mohawks dropped their contest to Osceola 42-29 Thursday night at PHS. Leading the way for the Tribe was Devyn Staples with 8 points, while Madison Chandler and Madison Crittenden each finished with 6 and MaKalia Beck had 5. Pacing the junior Lady Seminole offense were Imani Fletcher with 15 and N'Keyla Barksdale with 12.
Scoring by quarters had the visitors up 11-8 after one, and ahead 21-13 by intermission. The Lady Seminole enjoyed a 29-17 advantage going into the final frame, and cruised to the win.
Rivercrest at PHS
The Lady Colts of Rivercrest visited PHS Monday night and swept the Tribe in 3A-3 conference play. In the nightcap the senior girls fell to the visitors by a final of 77-48.
Leading the way for the Mohawks on offense was Wright with 11 while Bailey Pollard finished with 9 points on the game. Top scorer for the Lady Colts was Taylor Harris, who finished with 30. As a team the Mohawks converted on 8 of 13 free throw attempts on the contest, while Rivercrest attempted 21 free throws and completed 9 of those.
The junior Lady Mohawks faced a very athletic Rivercrest squad Monday evening and dropped a 35-20 decision. Scoring for the Tribe were MaKalia Beck and Grayson Murray with 4 each, while Devyn Staples and Karsen Williams with 3 each. Meanwhile, Kayla Jarrett had 17 for the Lady Colts in the win.
The Lady Colts also took the seventh grade contest by a final of 38-21. Top scorer for the Mohawks in the loss was Reagan Ralph with 7, while Serra Moore had 12 for Rivercrest in the win.
The Lady Mohawks are scheduled to visit the Lady Bulldogs of Earle Thursday, Jan. 17 with just the junior and senior squads in action. Monday, Jan. 21 they'll visit the Hoxie Lady Mustangs with the seventh grade, junior and senior teams slated to compete. The following day, Tuesday, Jan. 22 they're scheduled to visit Rivercrest for a re-match with the Lady Colts with all three squads in action. They'll follow that up Thursday, Jan. 24 with a visit to Harrisburg.
