The Piggott Mohawks continue to plow through their conference schedule, and last Friday visited the Harrisburg Hornets where they took both the junior and senior contests. The Tribe visited the Osceola Seminole Tuesday evening and fell by double digits, and will host the Hoxie Mustangs Friday night at PHS. Currently, both the junior and senior boys have secured spots near the top of the conference, and the coming weeks will go a long way toward determining their seeding in next month's district tournaments.

The Mohawks had been scheduled to visit Rivercrest last Tuesday evening, but the weather forced the postponement of that contest. Friday night they made the trip to Harrisburg, and beat the Hornets easily for the fourth time this season.

As they have in their previous meetings, the Mohawks used their size and strength advantage to jump out to an early lead they would never relinquish. Behind a balanced scoring attack they took a 17-13 lead after the first quarter, and extended that to a 35-23 advantage by intermission. The Tribe also dominated the second half, outscoring their hosts 19-14 in the third quarter and 19-13 in the fourth, to reach the 73-55 final.

Pacing the Mohawks on the night was Austin Murray with 16 points, while Will Jett and Trevor Grubb each had 12 points and Lucas Brewer was also in double figures with 11. As a team the Mohawks were just 14 of 30 from the free throw line. Leading the way for the Hornets was Alec Witt with 21.

Junior boys

The junior Mohawks also continue to have good mid-season success, as they beat the Hornets 34-23 in the early game Friday night. Leading the way for the junior Tribe was Bret Fuller and Quinton Mauldin with 8 points each, while Nick Harris had 7. Pacing the Hornet attack was Hammond with 8 in the loss.

As the season begins to wind down both the Mohawk boy's teams are near the top of the conference standings. As a matter of fact, prior to Tuesday night's game at Osceola both the junior and senior squads stood in second place in 3A-3 conference play.

Also on the schedule this week is a home set with Hoxie, set for Friday, Jan.25, at PHS. Next Tuesday, Jan. 29, the junior and senior boys will both be in action at home against Earle. That afternoon the Bulldogs will bring all four teams, boys and girls, and all four are scheduled to be in action at the PHS gym. The Mohawks also have a game with Rivercrest to make up, and will close out the conference schedule on the road at Manila Friday, Feb. 1.
