Lady Mohawks Drop Two, Junior Girls on a Roll

The Piggott Lady Mohawks dropped two conference games in the past week, while the junior girls won their contests. The two squads took on the Lady Bulldogs of Earle last Thursday, Jan. 17 and then traveled to Hoxie for a set with the Lady Mustangs Monday, Jan. 21.

Earle Games

The Lady Bulldogs visited PHS Thursday night and beat the Tribe 61-30. Leading the way for the Mohawks in the loss was senior Mallory Wright with 12 while Kayla Pope led all scorers with 17 for Earle.

Scoring by quarters saw the Mohawks down 15-8 at the end of the first quarter, and facing a 29-13 deficit by the halftime break. The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 50-18 by the end of the third and cruised on to the 31 point win.

Junior girls

The junior Lady Mohawks led wire-to-wire in last week's conference victory over Earle at the PHS gym. The Tribe came out hot and jumped out to a 9-5 lead by the end of the first quarter, and extended that to 17-11 by the intermission. They continued to dominate in the second half as well, outscoring the visitors 10-4 and 11-8 in the third and fourth frames to notch a 38-23 conference win.

Leading the way for the junior squad was MaKalia Beck with 16, while Madison Chandler had 6 and Devyn Staples and Grayson Murray had 4 points each. Top scorer for the Lady Bulldogs was Vaneshia Price with 17.

Hoxie Games

The Lady Mohawks traveled to Hoxie Monday, Jan. 21 and fell at the hands of the Lady Mustangs by a final of 60-40. The hosts got a big game from Brandy Alls with 28 points, and held the Tribe to just two points in the fourth quarter, in posting the conference win.

Leading the way for the Tribe was Kacey Crossfield with 12 points, while Wright finished with 11, Jessica Scheffler had 6 and Bailey Pollard finished with 5 points. Alls led all scorers with her 28, and had 5 three-point baskets on the game.

As a team the Mohawks attempted 30 free throws, and converted on 20 of those attempts. Meanwhile the Lady Mustangs were 14 of 18 from the charity stripe.

Junior's Win

The junior Lady Mohawks got a 20 point performance from Colby Crossfield as they beat the Lady Mustangs 39-33 in the early game Monday night at Hoxie. Crossfield scored 14 of her game-high points in the second half, and made a total of 6 three-pointers in the process. Rounding out the Mohawk scoring were Devyn Staples with 7 while MaKalia Beck and Ambrea Massey had 5 points each. Leading the way for the Lady Mustangs was Bekkah Kopp with 18 points in the conference loss.

With the win the junior girls extend their season record to 10-8.

The seventh grade squad was also in action at Hoxie, and fell in OT 29-27 despite 11 points from Karsen Williams.

The girls traveled to Rivercrest Tuesday, Jan. 22 for a conference set with the Lady Colts and fell to their hosts. They're scheduled to host the Lady Hornets of Harrisburg Thursday, Jan. 24 at PHS. Next Tuesday, Jan. 29 both girls teams will be in action at home against Earle, as they'll take part in a four-game set with the Mohawk boy's teams. That Thursday, Jan. 31 the girls are scheduled to close out the conference portion of their schedule at Manila.
