The Piggott Lady Mohawks swept Harrisburg in a home set Thursday, Jan. 24. Actually, the seventh grade squad played to a 33-33 tie--while the junior and senior girls won their contests with the visiting Lady Hornets. With the tie the seventh grade girls record now stands at 4-7-1 overall.

The Lady Mohawks got a big game from Mallory Wright Thursday night, as she led the Tribe with 26 points in the 46-35 conference win over Harrisburg. Wright was also 12 of 17 from the free throw line on the night, including a 6 for 8 performance in the fourth quarter. In fact, the senior scored all but three of her points in the second half of play.

The Tribe came out of the locker room aggressively for Coach Alan Rabjohn, and rode the momentum to an 11-5 advantage by the end of the first quarter. In the second frame the Hornets fought back, and by the intermission had taken a 19-15 lead.

But, the Mohawks made adjustments during the halftime break and came out and outscored their visitors 17-7 in the period to take a 32-26 lead. Down the stretch the Mohawks continued to make their free throws, and behind Wright's big second half cruised to the 11 point win.

Wright led all scorers with 26, Breanna Chandler finished with 8 points, including two 3-pointers; Jessica Scheffler had 4 while Bailey Pollard, Sydney Tarno, Shelby Chavez and Quest Emerson each had a two points.

As a team the Lady Mohawks converted on 18 of 34 free throw attempts.

Juniors Win

The junior Lady Mohawks played a tight game with the visiting Lady Hornets Thursday night, but held on for a one point win.

As the senior girls did in the nightcap, the junior Lady Mohawks came out strong and by the end of the first quarter led 7-5. The second frame was just the opposite, with the Lady Hornets gaining the advantage, and in the process the two teams went into the locker room at intermission knotted at 13-13.

The second half proved to be just as close, as neither team could gain an advantage. In the third period the visitors outscored the Lady Mohawks 5-4 in the frame, as they took an 18-17 advantage into the fourth quarter.

In the pivotal final period the Tribe made a run, and was able to stretch their lead to as many as five points. But, poor shooting down the stretch allowed the Hornets to get back into the contest.

As time expired, and the Mohawks up by one, the Hornets made one last ditch effort but the shot rolled off the iron as the clock ran out giving the Tribe the 27-26 conference win.

Pacing the Mohawks was Ambrea Massey with 8 points, while Devyn Staples finished with 7, MaKalia Beck had 6 points and Colby Crossfield, Madison Chandler and Taylor Choate finished with two points each. As a team the junior girls converted on 3 of 6 free throw attempts.

Leading the way for Harrisburg in the loss were Keely Edwards and Jessica Webb with 8 points each. As a team the Lady Hornets also shot 50 percent from the charity stripe, as they converted on 4 of their 8 free throw attempts.

Both the junior and senior squads were scheduled to be in action Tuesday afternoon at PHS, as they were slated to host the Earle Bulldogs with the first game set to tip at 4:30. They're scheduled to be on the road Thursday, Jan. 31 as they visit Manila for a re-match with the Lady Lions.
