Roller Coaster Week for Lady Mohawks
The Piggott Lady Mohawks dropped two conference games last week, leaving them as the sixth seed in next week's district tournament at Hoxie. Meanwhile, the junior girls rode a roller coaster of emotions, losing a one point game to Earle Tuesday; getting doubled-up at Manila Thursday and then turning around and beating that same Lady Lion team Saturday in the first round of the junior district tournament at Corning.
The Lady Bulldogs of Earle visited PHS Tuesday, Jan. 29 as part of a four-game set with the boy's teams and rode a 29 point performance by Shakiniah Poole to a 74-58 win.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead in the afternoon contest, and led 21 to 12 by the end of the first quarter. They extended the lead to 40-24 by the halftime break. But, the Lady Mohawks cut the lead to 11 by the end of the third as the Bulldogs took a 57-46 advantage into the fourth. In the final frame the visitors outscored the Tribe 17-12 to take the win.
Leading the way for the Lady Mohawks was Mallory Wright with 21, although she was shut-out in the fourth quarter. Wright also converted on 7 of 11 free throws, as the Tribe was 17 of 27 as a team. Also in double figures for the Lady Mohawks was Sydney Tarno with 12, while seven others were also in the scoring column.
The junior Lady Mohawks jumped out to an early lead on the Lady Bulldogs last Tuesday, only to fade late and lose 32-31. Scoring by quarters saw the Mohawks up 14-6 by the end of the first, and they enjoyed a 22-13 advantage at intermission. The two teams played even in the third, with the Tribe up by eight points, 27-19 going into the fourth quarter. But, down the stretch the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Mohawks 13-4 as they took the one point conference win.
Leading the way for the Mohawks was MaKalia Beck with 11, while Devyn Staples and Colby Crossfield had 6 each and Ambrea Massey finished with 4. Aundra Allen had 19 for the Lady Bulldogs in the win.
Thursday, Jan. 31 the Lady Mohawks visited Manila and dropped both games to the Lady Lions.
The senior girls fell to their hosts by a final of 69-27 as the Lions ran out to an early lead and never looked back. Leading the way for the Lady Mohawks was Wright with 10 points, while Bailey Pollard and Breanna Chandler each had four points in the loss. Shelby Wallace paced the Manila offense on the night with 21 points. As a team the Tribe converted on 10 of 15 free throw attempts, while Manila was 13 of 19 from the charity stripe.
The Junior Lady Mohawks dropped a 40-20 conference loss to the junior Lady Lions Thursday night at Manila. Makalia Beck paced the Tribe on the night with 9 points, while Devyn Staples had 7. Leading the way for the Lady Lions junior squad was Lauren Wood with 12 points.
Two days after losing to the Lady Lions at Manila the junior Lady Mohawks got another chance Saturday morning at the junior district tournament at Corning. The Tribe surprised the Lions, jumping out to an early lead and then holding on down the stretch for the 28-23 win.
The first quarter of play was all Mohawks, as the Tribe jumped out to a 10-2 advantage after one. In the second quarter Manila battled back and cut the lead to just one, 14-13 at the break. The third quarter went to the Lady Lions, as they enjoyed an 18-15 lead going into the final frame. But, the fourth quarter saw the Tribe outscore Manila 13-5 in the frame to take the win in their third meeting of the year.
Devyn Staples paced the effort for the Mohawks with 9, Colby Crossfield finished with 8 and MaKalia Beck had 7. Leading the way for Manila was Taylor Harmon with 8 points as they are eliminated from the tournament bracket.
The junior girl's second round game is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 as they take on Rivercrest.
The senior girls were scheduled to visit Walnut Ridge Tuesday, Feb. 5. They'll take part in senior night this Thursday, Feb. 8 in a twin-bill with the senior boys as they play host to county rival Rector. The senior night activities are set for 5:30 p.m. prior to start of the girls game with the Lady Cougars. The Lady Mohawks district tournament game at Hoxie will be played at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 as they take on Harrisburg. With a win they'll advance to play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14. A win in the second round will earn the girls a trip to the semi-finals, and a 6 p.m. start Friday, Feb. 15. The girl's district championship game will be played at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16.
