Jessica Lee drives to the basket in action against BIC in the district final at MHS

The Marmaduke Lady Greyhounds treated their home fans to the basketball equivalent of a victory lap Friday night in the finals of the 2A-3 District Tournament at MHS, cruising past Buffalo Island Central, 69-41, to claim the tourney crown.

Sidnee Bopp and Whitley Boggs put on a three-point shooting clinic, combining to hit 12 of their 22 attempts from the Land O' Plenty. Bopp led all scorers with 25 points on the night and Whitley Boggs notched 17 in the win. Jessica Boggs also scored in double figures for the Lady 'Hounds, netting 11 points. As a team, Marmaduke made 14 of 32 treys, sniping away at the Lady Mustangs.

"This team, it continues to amaze me," MHS head coach Rick Smith said. "They've met every challenge head-on this year and are only getting better. BIC's a great team. We've had to play them five times this year, so we knew firsthand how tough they are."

Marmaduke got out to a 15-7 first quarter advantage, paced by eight points from Whitley Boggs in the opening frame. BIC hung around around in the second frame, trailing 28-21 at intermission, but the second half saw the game belong to Bopp. Bopp notched 20 points in the third and fourth quarters, including sinking six three-pointers as Marmaduke rolled down the stretch.

Marmaduke led 49-32 following the third frame.

In addition to hot shooting, the Lady 'Hounds also did a good job of limiting the Larger Lady Mustangs to one shot per possession.

"Jessica Lee did a good job on the boards for us," Smith said. "She had about eight rebounds, but she kept more than that alive on sheer hustle. If you could get an assist on rebounding, she would have had several."

Rachel Vangilder, five points, Alexus Jones, four, Lee, four, and Madison Price, three points, rounded out the Marmaduke scoring.

Brittany Fowler led BIC with 19 in the loss. Cassidy Qualls finished with 11 points for BIC.

Bopp' excellent night also included work on the defensive end. She held Fowler, named co-conference MVP along with MHS' Whitley Boggs, to just four points in the second half.

Marmaduke had five players named All-Conference during a ceremony following the championship game. Whitley Boggs, Jessica Lee, Sidnee Bopp, Alexus Jones and Jessica Boggs were announced as All-Conference players before their home crowd.

With the win, the Lady Greyhounds enter the 2A North Regional Tournament at Sloan-Hendrix as the top seed from 2A-3. MHS is slated to face Walnut Ridge, the fourth seed from 2A-2, at 7 p.m. tonight (Wednesday). With a win there, MHS will advance to play either Pangburn or Marked Tree at 7 p.m. Friday. The regional final is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Sloan-Hendrix.
