With the Greyhound bench looking on, members of the Marmaduke and Norphlet team wrangle for possession of the basketball during Thursday night's 2A state championship game at Little Rock.

The Marmaduke Lady Greyhounds ended their season Thursday night, losing to the Norphlet Lady Leopards in the 2A state championship game at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock. The 'Hounds struggled in the second half, allowing Norphlet to pull off the 44-41 win to complete a perfect 35-0 season.

Whitley Boggs paced the Marmaduke attack with 18 points, all coming in the first half, and fouled out late. As a team the Greyhounds went stone cold in the second half, including 0-13 from beyond the three point arc.

But, on the plus side the Lady Greyhounds set the mark for the most wins of any team in the state this year, as they finish at 41-3.

In other first day action Thursday, the Bay Yellowjackets notched their second championship in three years, beating regional rival Concord 54-51. Earlier the girls 3A title went to Greenland, as they pounded Jessieville 59-32. In the nightcap, the 4A boys title went to the Pottsville Apache, as they beat Pine Bluff Dollarway 54-50 in an outstanding contest. It was Pottsville's first appearance in the state final, and came under a first year coach.

Friday's schedule gets underway at 3:30 p.m. as Harding Academy takes on Little Rock Episcopal for the 3A boys title. That will be followed at 5:15 by the 7A girls final between the two Forth Smith teams, Southside and Northside. At 7 p.m. the 5A boys title game will feature Alma and Jacksonville, and that will be followed around 8:45 by the girl's 5A championship featuring the Paragould Lady Rams and the Jacksonville Lady Red Devils.

Saturday's schedule is as follows--11 a.m., 4A girls between Prairie Grove and Malvern; 12:45 p.m., 2A boys championship between regional rivals East Poinsett County and Cedar Ridge; 2:30 p.m., girls' 1A between the Weiner Lady Cardinal (in what could be the final game in school history) and Nevada; 4:15 p.m., Class 7A boys final between Fayetteville and North Little Rock; 6 p.m., girls 6A final between Little Rock Hall and Little Rock Parkview; and the nightcap around 7:45 will be the 6A boys final. That contest also featured the squad from Little Rock Hall as they take on the Jonesboro Hurricane.

The games are being played in historic, and somewhat dusty, Barton Coliseum on the state fairgrounds. Parking is accessible from Schiller Street for the public.
