Lady Cougars Take Conference Win
The Lady Cougars opened 2A-3 conference play with a splash Thursday, topping the Lady Indians of Marked Tree, 4-2, in Rector.
Marked Tree struck first in the contest, with Hanna Walters hitting a solo homerun with a little help from the day's winds in the visitors' half of the first inning.
Rector responded well in the second inning. Senior hurler Kelly Fowler delivered a three-pitch frame, with the Lady Cougar defense firing on all cylinders, getting the put-outs with ease. In the bottom of the second, Brittany Fair got things started with a single and advanced to second on a poor throw. Lindsey Ford followed with a double down the right field line, scoring Fair. Colby Lynch doubled to bring in Ford, as Rector moved ahead 2-1. Anna Blackshare drove in a run in the fourth and sixth innings. Marked Tree added a run in the sixth, but would come no closer.
"That was a big game," RHS head coach Louis Ernest said. "A big win. We anticipate Marked Tree to be one of the best teams in our conference, so this win is good for our confidence and helps us start conference play out on the right foot."
Fowler earned the win in the circle, working all seven innings for Rector. She allowed two runs on five hits while striking out seven.
"Kelly did exactly what we need her to do," Ernest said. "She pitched well and stayed in control. Defensively, I thought we played great. We made the right plays in the field and didn't give them anything extra. Just a really good game by our defense in the field."
Blackshare led the way at the plate, going 2-4 with a pair of RBIs. Fair also had two hits in the win. Ford and Lynch added an RBI double each.
The Lady Cougars improved to 1-0-1 on the season with the victory and are 1-0 in conference play.
The Lady Cougars will return to action next week, as the school is currently dismissed for spring break.
