Gospel Concert to Benefit Relay For Life
Over two dozen performers from across Clay County will come together beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 23 for a gospel concert at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Piggott. Proceeds from the special event benefit the Clay County Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society.
Beverly Scott is one of the program organizers, and will serve as MC that evening. "I've got a huge line-up, it's going to be awesome," she noted. "First off will be an old fashioned choir that includes a lot of local singers that have been performing around here for awhile, like Jerry Causey, Gary Howell, Gerald Morris, Travis Boyd--and the list goes on and on. In all, we've got about 30 singers performing that evening."
Scott noted that the Hitt's Chapel Quartet would be next on the schedule, and the evening would also include performances by the Church of Christ Choir, Jamie Wilson and many others. "There are singers from Piggott, Rector and Corning--in fact, we've got a great singer from Corning by the name of Sophia Townsend. She's just 10 years old, and she will knock your socks off" she added.
The event was not only organized as a fundraiser for the Relay For Life, but also to try to breathe new life into the effort and foster more cooperation within the county. "The support for the Relay For Life has been down recently, and we hope that through this event we can all come together and show more support. In fact, this is the 100th anniversary of the American Cancer Society, and if you have been touched by cancer--and most all of us have, I hope you will make plans to attend."
Scott noted that admission is a suggested donation of $7 for adults and $3 for kids age 4 to 12, but added that any and all donations would be welcome. "If you can't pay $7 that's okay, come on out and pay what you can," she explained. "But, if you can pay more than $7, that's okay too, it will go for a good cause."
The Emmanuel Baptist Church bus will also be in operation that evening, and those wanting a ride may contact Kristi Fuller at 634-6529. "Bill Veal will be driving the bus, and he'll be glad to come by and pick you up if you need a ride," Scott added.
"A lot of folks have worked hard to make this a great event, including Susie Bowman, our chair; Gary Laughlin and Paula Laughlin, Kristi Fuller and Sharon Tillman just to mention a few," Scott added. "We hope everyone will come out and be a part of the event and help us in the fight against cancer."
Those wanting more information may call Bowman at 598-3457, Laughlin at 634-6892 or Scott at 598-7051.
