Longtime Piggott Businessman Jack Ballard Dies at 82
Longtime Piggott businessman Jack Ballard died Wednesday, May 15, 2013 following a brief illness. He was 82. Ballard was a third generation nurseryman in the Piggott area, owning and operating Ballard Nursery Company and Ballard Farms for many years.
Ballard's grandparents first came to the Piggott area in 1895, along with his father, Elmer, who was just four years old at the time.
The family formed, and owned and operated, the Ballard Nursery Company for nearly 90 years. Following the retirement of his father, Ballard was active in running the family business and in 1973 bought out the remaining shareholders to gain sole ownership. About ten years later the nursery equipment was sold at auction, and the land converted to row-cropping.
Ballard was a lifelong resident of Piggott, served in the military during the Korean War and was active in civic affairs. In recent years he had an increasing interest in local history, and worked tirelessly to document and preserve historical items and photographs.
