Piggott Youth Teams Qualify for State Tourney
The Piggott All-Stars nine and 10-year-old team earned a trip to the upcoming state tournament at Pine Bluff with a second place finish in the district tournament at Rector last week.
The talented young players battled a very good Walnut Ridge team in a 16-14 loss Wednesday, securing their ticket to the state tournament beginning July 12 at Pine Bluff.
"We were in it the whole time," coach Billy Joe Seal said of his team. "Walnut Ridge is a real good team, but we were right there with them, going back-and-forth."
The Piggott squad overcame a first round loss to Walnut Ridge by posting run-rule wins over Rector, Jackson County and Corning on their way to the finals.
"The boys are looking forward to going to state," Seal said. "If we play like we're capable, we should do pretty good there."
The team is hosting fundraisers to cover the expenses involved in taking part in a tournament such as this. The boys collected donations at the four-way stop on the Court Square this past weekend and will be operating a drink stand at the Fourth of July Picnic. The group also will be drying cars at Mohwak Car Wash for donations this Saturday.
"We appreciate everyone that's supported us this season and thank everyone who's leant a hand," Seal said. "These donations mean a lot to the kids and allow them to be a part of something like a state tournament."
Team members include Logan Ralph, Michael Parker, John Ford Hendrix, Holden Tarno, Austin Fair, Nate Lemmons, Brent Gossett, Cameron Collier, Brandon Seal, Brandon Palmer and Hayden Emerson. The team is coached by Shawn Parker, Chuck Emerson, Dave Hendrix, Chris Tarno and Billy Joe Seal.
A strong defense, and some offensive firepower, propelled Piggott's squad to the finals of the Little League Machine Pitch District Tournament recently. Piggott defeated Bald Knob 15-1 in the first round, then beat Corning in the second round 18-9 to reach the championship. The Piggott squad then dropped the hosts 10-3 in the double-elimination bracket, then lost back-to-back games to the Rector squad 12-0 and 19-8 to garner runner-up. This also qualifies the team for the state tournament at Arkadelphia set for July 5-9.
