Amanda Smallmon, FNP

Piggott Community Hospital's presence has grown with the addition of Amanda Smallmon, FNP, to its team of professionals. She joins the healthcare team including Dr. Jerry Muse and Tonny Dement, APN.

"I am really excited to be coming back to Piggott Community Hospital and its clinics," said Smallmon. Many in the area will remember her work as a clinician in PCH clinics in the past.

In 1999, Smallmon graduated with honors from the Mississippi County Community College nursing program with Associate in Applied Science. She graduated Cum Laude from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo., in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Continuing her education, in 2009 she advanced to a Master of Science in Nursing with High Honors and Academic Distinction from Southeast Missouri State.

A family nurse practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse who has completed additional training beyond that of a registered nurse. Nurse practitioners treat both physical and mental conditions through comprehensive history taking, physical exams and ordering tests for interpretation.

Nurse practitioners can provide a diagnosis and recommendations for a wide range of acute and chronic diseases within their scope of practice and provide appropriate treatment for patients, including prescribing medications. In this role, Smallmon can serve as a patient's primary health care provider.

Similar to all medical professions, the core philosophy of the field is individualized care that focuses on patients' conditions as well as the effects of illness on the lives of patients and their families. Family nurse practitioners make prevention, wellness, and patient education priorities.
