Summer Tennis League Tourneys Held
The Piggott Summer Tennis League wrapped up play recently, with the junior boys and senior girls division tournaments at the municipal courts. The league is conducted each summer by longtime Mohawk tennis coach Paul Seegraves, as he works to cultivate the next generation of players for what has been an enormously successful program.
A total of 10 young men took part in the summer league junior division, and three division championships were determined prior to the tournament. Red division champ was Carrington McDaniel, Nicolas Helms won the black division and Shawn-Hudson Seegraves won the white division. The tournament was played Monday, July 22, although Tyson Peters was unable to participate.
In the first round Jake Toombs defeated Stefan Gramling 6-0.
In the second round McDaniel beat Toombs 6-0, Jackson Howell beat Helms 6-4, Seegraves downed Aden Baggett 6-0 and Isaac Morris defeated Trey Cavaness 6-1.
In semi-final play it was McDaniel over Howell 6-4 while Seegraves downed Morris 6-0.
The third place set then went to Morris, as he defeated Howell 6-2. In the final it was Seegraves over the defending champion McDaniel 6-2.
In the consolation tournament Toombs beat Cavaness 6-2, then in the semi's it was Helms over Gramling 6-1 and Baggett defeated Toombs 6-3. The consolation final went to Helms, as he downed Baggett 7-5 in a tie-breaker.
A total of nine girls took part in the senior division of the summer league, which includes students in grades 9 through 12. Emilee Seegraves, an eighth grader, also moved up based on her earlier success in the junior division.
Two divisions were played prior to the tourney, with Katelynn Woodard winning the red division and Seegraves taking the black division. The tournament was played Tuesday, July 23 at the public courts, but Madison Crittenden was unable to participate.
In the first round of play it was Woodard over Ashlyn Moody 6-0, Sadie Sawyers got by Meghan Woodard 7-5, Hannah Wagster defeated Jillian Noles 6-0 and Seegraves beat Alex McDaniel 6-1.
In the semi's it was K. Woodard over Sawyers 6-1, while Seegraves got by Wagster 6-2.
Wagster then took the third place match over Sawyers 6-1.
In the finals Seegraves defeated Katelynn Woodard 7-6 (7-2) in a tiebreaker. Last year Woodard was the eighth ranked singles player in the Class 3A state tournament.
In the semi-finals of the consolation tournament M. Woodard beat Moody 6-0 and Noles defeated McDaniel 6-1. The consolation final then went to Woodard as she beat Noles 6-1.
