Piggott Summer Tennis League Wraps Up Play
The Piggott Summer Tennis League senior boy's division wrapped up play Thursday, July 25 with their annual tournament at the public courts. A total of nine boys took part this year, divided into two divisions. Also moving up based on their prior success in the junior division were Carrington McDaniel, Isaac Morris and Shawn-Hudson Seegraves.
Quinton Mauldin took the top honors in the Red Division, while Beau Jett won the Black Division in bracket play. But, Beau Jett along with All-State selections from last year Trevor Grubb and Will Jett, were unable to play in the tournament.
In the first round of play Carrington McDaniel beat Caleb Higgins 6-2, while Shawn-Hudson Seegraves beat Isaac Morris 6-1.
In the semi-finals it was Mauldin over McDaniel 6-1 while Wellman downed Seegraves 6-1. This set up the third place match, and Seegraves beat McDaniel 6-4.
In the finals Mauldin got by Wellman 7-6 (7-4) on a tiebreaker, as last year's sixth rank 3A singles player prevailed. And, in the consolation finals it was Higgins over Morris 6-3.
Tennis practice for the Mohawk teams is slated to get underway Monday, Aug. 12at the public tennis courts. The girls team will be practicing from 4 to 5:30 p.m. while the boy's team will practice from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The PHS tennis team will begin their season Monday, Aug. 26 as they take on the Riverside Rebels at Jonesboro.
