Piggott School Board Hires Band Director
The Piggott Schools Board of Education met in special session Thursday, Aug. 1, and approved several personnel matters. Luckily, with classes set to convene in less than two weeks, most of the key positions have been filled within the district. Thursday night the board took another step, hiring a new band director and biology teacher and re-assigning several staff members.
With all members, and key administration staff, in attendance the meeting was called to order. Prior to entering into an executive session to consider personnel matters, the board heard from members of the Piggott Band Boosters concerning the candidate for the band director's position.
Band booster president Mark Book spoke for those on hand, voicing the group's endorsement of the hiring of Jeremy Wortham as director. Wortham, a graduate of Greene County Tech and resident of Paragould, has been the director at East Poinsett County the past four years.
"We're here to voice our support of Mr. Wortham and answer any questions," Book told the board members. "Marching practice starts Monday, and although we don't have a show our kids hope to do well and we look forward to seeing them compete."
PES music instructor, and longtime band parent, Ellen Meadows echoed the sentiment adding, "we've heard nothing but good things about Mr. Wortham--I think we'll work well together."
After hearing from the patrons, the board voted to enter into an executive session to consider personnel issues, then re-convened to address those matters.
Board members first voted to accept the resignation of aide Trudy Wagster from her position at PHS. Next, they voted to transfer Misti Sanders from distance learning lab to the position of secretary at Piggott High School. In turn, the board voted to transfer the most recent high school secretary, Denise Featherston, to supervise in school suspension.
The board then voted to offer the contract for band director to Wortham, who was on hand for the meeting. They also voted to hire Misti Jolly as the new biology teacher at PHS, as she will be coming to the district after working last year at Marmaduke.
The board members also amended the agenda, and voted to hire Jamie Tharp for the distance learning lab to fill the position formerly held by Sanders.
