New Season, and Era for Lady Mohawk Volleyball
A new era of Lady Mohawk volleyball got underway this week, as former PHS standout Nikki Speer takes over the program. Speer replaces former coach Melissa Williams, who has taken a job with Paragould as a teacher and assistant coach. Williams joined former PHS star Angie Donner on the Ram staff, along with two other former Lady Mohawk standouts, Nikki Pounds and Angie (Beck) Burnside.
This year's squad is an experienced bunch, having lost just two players to graduation in the spring. Speer, who is assisted by Melissa Turner this season, also has the luxury of a good core of leadership with five seniors on the roster. The players have been busy attending team camps the past several weeks, and are now prepping for the season at hand. They have three sets scheduled during late August as they continue to tune-up, and will begin conference play Sept. 3.
The players also won't have long to wait before getting a visit from former coach Williams, as the Paragould Lady Rams will take part in a jamboree at PHS next Thursday, Aug. 22.
The jamboree at PHS will be the first pre-season action for the Mohawks, as they host Paragould, Harrisburg, Westside and Jonesboro. The first set is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. at PHS.
Tuesday, Aug. 27, the Tribe will visit Westside with all squads in action and Thursday, Aug. 29, they'll host the Lady Raiders of Nettleton.
Tuesday, Sept. 3, they'll visit Ridgefield Christian in conference play, and Sept. 5, they'll host Cedar Ridge. That Saturday, Sept. 7, they'll play in the Southaven Invitational in Mississippi and Monday, Sept. 9, they'll visit the Kennett Lady Indians. On Sept. 10, they'll host CRA and on Sept. 12, the squad will visit Hoxie.
The Blazer Blast at Valley View will be held Sept. 13 to 14, and the Tribe will return home for a set with Walnut Ridge on Sept. 17. The Mohawks will visit Harrisburg on Sept. 19; will take part in the ASU Playday on Saturday, Sept. 21 and will visit Portageville on Sept. 24. They'll wrap up the month with a home set against Ridgefield Christian on Sept. 26.
The Lady Mohawks visit Cedar Ridge on Oct. 1, and travel to CRA on Oct. 3. That weekend, Oct. 4 and 5, the junior squad will be in tournament play at Brookland.
Hoxie visits PHS on Oct. 8, followed by road games at Walnut Ridge and Greene County Tech on Oct. 10 and 14. Harrisburg comes to town for the final time as a conference foe Oct. 15, as the Hornets will be moving up to 4A for the following season.
The junior district will be at Ridgefield Christian on Oct. 19, as the Lady Mohawks begin defense of last year's championship.
Meanwhile, the senior squad will wrap up the regular season with home sets against Paragould and Brookland, on Oct. 21 and 24. The 3A state volleyball tournament will be played Oct. 29 to Nov. 2, at Alpena High School.
