Junior Cougars Scrimmage with Bobcats

Chance Scott carries a Corning defender for a big gain during the Junior Cougars' game with Corning Monday in Rector.

Monday night's preseason meeting with Corning was a tough matchup for the hosting Junior Cougars. Rector fell to the bigger, more experienced Junior Bobcats, 42-8.

Last season, Rector relied heavily upon a freshmen class which, as sophomores, is helping rebuild the senior high program. This year's junior high squad has few players with any experience at the junior high level.

"We've got a lot of guys who just haven't played much junior high football," coach Lewis Ernest said. "We don't have that experience. We're relying heavily upon eighth graders and seventh graders this season. We're asking them to jump in at the deep end from the very beginning. It's going to be tough, but if they stick with it, they'll be better players."

Corning led 14-0 after the first quarter, and was up 26-0 in the second frame.

Rector scored their only touchdown of the night with 25 seconds left in the first half. Tommy Stokes broke free for a 46-yard touchdown on a quarter scramble to the left, weaving around Corning defenders. Chance Scott set the play up with a tough-nosed carry for 29 yards on the previous play, the first of the drive. Scott carried two defenders on the final 10 yards of the carry. Stokes ran the ball up the middle for the successful conversion.

Corning would break off a 75-yard touchdown run to close the out the first half with a 34-8 lead. The guests added another score in the third frame to set the final in place.

There were some promising signs for the Junior Cougars. In addition to making multiple tackles on the night, Tommy Stokes and Lonnie Yancey recovered a fumble each for Rector. Also on the defensive side, Yancey, Scott and Jagger Ellis came up with quarterback sacks in the contest.

"Even in a game like that, there are signs of improvement," Ernest said. "There were guys I saw improve while the game was being played. It's one of those things where we're not where we want to be, but we've started taking steps to get there. This a young team and it'll take some time."

The Junior Cougars are set to visit Augusta beginning at 7 p.m. Sept. 5. The squad will visit Salem on Sept. 12 before returning to Rector to face Midland on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The high school team is set to take part in junior varsity action before returning to conference play next season. Rector is slated to take part in a jamboree Thursday at Cedar Ridge. The JV Cougars will visit Westside Sept. 9. Rector will host Midland in JV action on Tuesday, Sept. 17, taking the field following the junior high game.
