Mohawks Tie Panthers in Season Opener
The Piggott Mohawks and the Yellville-Summit Panthers played to a 30-30 tie Friday night in Yellville, as both squads start their season at 0-0-1.
The Tribe led 16-14 at the half, but gave up the tying touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. The Mohawks then pushed the ball downfield on the running of Nick Haywood, but the bruising running back was stuffed on fourth and goal at the Panther three.
The Piggott defense then did their part, forcing the home team into a similar fourth down with less than a minute to play--and making the stop to avoid the loss.
The final Mohawk drive also sputtered, as quarterback Austin Murray was unable to connect on three straight pass attempts. Haywood got the nod on the final play, with just three seconds left, but the Panthers held on to insure the tie.
Next Friday the Mohawks will visit the Brookland Bearcats in another non-conference game. This week the Bearcats pounded Brinkley by a final of 54-43.
