Tribe Jinxed by Bearcats on Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th was not a good day for the Piggott Mohawks as they traveled to Brookland for a non-conference game with the 4A Bearcats. And needless to say, fans of the Tribe won't be looking back on the evening with fond memories after suffering the loss of a senior leader and seeing a late lead evaporate.
Although the Tribe was handed a 45-44 come-from-behind loss at the hands of the 4A Bearcats, it was a much bigger loss which will be remembered as standout senior starter Garrett Cook was felled by a broken leg.
Cook, a force on both sides of the football for the Mohawks, was taken from the field by stretcher after breaking his leg below the knee. Luckily, team physician Dr. Greg Mallard was on hand to provide immediate assistance, and BHS had a Paramedic and ambulance crew standing by if needed.
The Bearcats took the win after tying the game with less than a minute to play, and then kicked the winning PAT after being flagged for an infraction on a two-point conversion attempt.
The Mohawks did try to mount a late drive, but an interception by the home team sealed the deal. With the loss the Tribe falls to 0-1-1 and will host Palestine-Wheatley Friday night at Parker Field in the home opener.
Ryan Rogers will have all the details from the sidelines in the Sept. 18, print and online editions of the CCTD.
Other regional scores had Jonesboro Westside over Corning 41-34, Hoxie beat Riverview 28-14, it was EPC over Manila 54-6, Gosnel downed Osceola 27-14, Lake Hamilton beat Earle 35-26, Marked Tree thumped Harrisburg 34-13 and it was Rivercrest over Greene County Tech 25-13.
