Lady Mohawks Strong in Conference Play
The Piggott Lady Mohawk volleyball squad continues to plow through conference play, notching a key win over CRA at home last Tuesday, then beating Hoxie on the road Thursday and breezing by Ridgefield Christian Monday afternoon at PHS.
Mohawks vs CRA
Supporters of the Lady Mohawks turned out in full force Tuesday, Sept. 10, to "Black Out" the PHS gym as they hosted the Lady Falcons of Crowley's Ridge Academy. And, although the visitors took the first game 22-25, the Tribe responded and took three of the last four games to take the match.
In the second game the Mohawks were tested, but won in a tiebreaker 27-25. They continued to ride that momentum in the third game, and took it by a score of 25-13. In game four the visitors made a match of it, as they held on to post a 24-26 win. But, in the fifth game the Lady Mohawks prevailed, and made a statement in the process, winning 15-7.
Leading the way for the Tribe was Kacey Crossfield with 10 kills and four aces, meanwhile Jessie Scheffler and Jessie Mallard both had 9 kills each. Erica Vancil had a team high 14 digs, while McKenzie Hopkins led with six blocks and Taylor Davis recorded 22 assists and 4 aces from the service line.
Mohawks at Hoxie
The Tribe met the Hoxie Lady Mustangs for the first time this season on Thursday, Sept. 12, and took the set in five games.
The Mohawks came out hot in the road match, and took the first two games by scores of 25-15 and 25-16. But, the Lady Mustangs responded in the third and fourth games, winning 21-25 and 16-25 to even the match. But, in the fifth game the Tribe flexed their muscles, and powered to a 15-9 win to take the conference match.
Erica Vancil paced the Lady Mohawks with 18 digs, while Kacey Crossfield had 17 kills and Jessie Scheffler and McKenzie Hopkins combined for 17 blocks in the win.
Mohawks vs Ridgefield Christian
The Lady Mohawks made short order of the squad from Ridgefield Christian Monday, Sept. 16, as they swept the visitors in three straight at PHS.
The Lady Mohawks came out of the locker room strong, and posted 25-18 and 25-19 wins in the first two games. The squad then powered on to record the conference sweep 25-10 in the nightcap.
Taylor Davis had a big night for the Tribe, as she recorded 16 assists. Meanwhile, Kacey Crossfield continues to shine for Coach Nikki Speer as she had 13 kills, and Bree Chandler was a force to be reckoned with at the service line with four aces.
The Lady Mohawks were scheduled to host Walnut Ridge on Tuesday, Sept. 17, in conference play. They'll be back in action this Thursday, Sept. 19, as they travel to Harrisburg for a set with the much-improved Lady Hornets This Saturday, Sept. 21, the senior squad will take part in the annual "Play Day" at Arkansas State University, and all teams will be in action on the road Tuesday, Sept. 24, as the Mohawks visit the Lady Bulldogs of Portageville for a non-conference set.
