Lady Mohawks Rolling Through 3-3A
The Piggott Lady Mohawk volleyball squad continues to roll through conference play, and last week recorded two key victories in 3-3A competition. Tuesday afternoon they beat Walnut Ridge at home, and then followed that up with a trip to Harrisburg where they beat the Lady Hornets. The junior and senior "A" squads visited the Lady Bulldogs of Portageville (Mo.) Tuesday afternoon. And Thursday, Sept. 26, conference play will resume with a home set against Ridgefield Christian in the PHS gym.
The Lady Mohawks hosted Walnut Ridge on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and beat the Lady Bobcats in four games. Getting off to a slow start, the Tribe dropped the first game by a final of 25-23. But, they responded in game two with a 25-18 win, then beat their visitors in the final two games by scores of 25-20 and 25-22 to notch the conference win.
Leading the way for the Tribe was senior Taylor Davis with 39 assists, while Kacey Crossfield recorded 16 kills, McKenzie Hopkins had 10 blocks and Erica Vancil had 20 digs in the wins.
Thursday, Sept. 19, the Lady Mohawks made the trip to Harrisburg for a showdown with the Lady Hornets. And, when the dust had cleared the Tribe had beaten their hosts in five games to remain undefeated in conference play.
As they have been known to do this year, the Lady Mohawks got off to a slow start at Harrisburg and dropped the first game by a score of 25-19. But, they responded in the second game with a 25-16 win, and then posted another 25-16 win in game three of the set.
In game four the much-improved Lady Hornets put up a good fight, and took the contest by a score of 25-19. But, the Tribe once again rose to the challenge in game five and beat the Hornets 15-9 to take the win.
Bree Chandler had a big day for the Tribe, contributing eight of their 21 aces on the day. The Mohawks also combined for 37 kills as a team, with Kacey Crossfield laying down 10 kills. Meanwhile, Taylor Davis finished with 28 assists and McKenzie Hopkins had 10 blocks in keeping their conference record spotless.
Tuesday, Sept. 24 the squad took on the Lady Bulldogs of Portageville and swept the set in three straight, 25-15, 25-15 and 25-6. Taylor Davis led the team with 17 assists, 8 digs and 5 aces. Kacey Crossfield also contributed an even 12 kills in the win over the Southeast Missouri team.
As mentioned, the Tribe will be back at home this Thursday, Sept. 26, as they host Ridgefield Christian. They'll be back in action Tuesday, Oct. 1, as they visit Cedar Ridge with all teams playing, and on Thursday, Oct. 3 they'll visit Crowley's Ridge Academy for a conference set with the Lady Falcons. The junior high team will be taking part in a tournament at Brookland on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5. And, the Tribe will return to the friendly confines of the PHS gym on Tuesday, Oct. 8, as they host the Lady Mustangs of Hoxie.
